Communications. One of several centrally located 3x5 message boards. This one is in the main kitchen dining building.

Smoker's lounge Smoker's lounge
Smoker's lounge. AKA the compost cafe, since the building is a remodeled composting toilet. Though we don't have many tobacco smokers here and there are very few places where smoking is permitted, over the years smokers have put a lot of effort into making a comfortable space.

Smoker's cafe Smoker's cafe
Smoker's cafe. Very much a small subgroup, smokers are part of the diversity of Twin Oaks.

Opinion and idea board Opinion and idea board
Opinion and idea board. Dianne and Indigo look over a public notice from the (in)famous O & I Board. The Board serves famously well for posting of information, proposals, etc. It serves infamously poorly for fanning the flames of periodic opinion wars that typically are cleaned up finally by face to face communication.

Our barber Our barber
"Our barber." Marcello does a lot, but not all, of the haircutting for Twin Oakers. Some don't cut their hair, ever. Some cut their own. Some "hire" others, for labor credits.

Dumpster day Dumpster day
Dumpster day. For years now there have been end-of-schoolyear trips to dive the fabulous dumpsters of nearby University of Virginia. It's amazing what rich kids toss out when the term has ended, including housewares, shoes (sometimes new even), working computers, and much more. A great bazaar is held the day after the dive with Oakers plowing through the take looking something they really "need."

On site cutting On site cutting
On site cutting. Why pay for a barber when your friends can do the job just fine. Marcello gives Coyote a trim.
-
Ice cream frenzy Ice cream frenzy
Ice cream frenzy. When we have a lot of extra milk production there might be regular homemade ice cream. At other times many of us are quite happy to dive into the occaisonal load of donated store bought delight.
-
Satellite internet Satellite internet
Satellite internet. Most of us use computers for email, and many use the web for work and entertainment these days. Living as rurally as we do and with phone service controlled by a for-profit company, the usual forms of high speed internet can't be obtained at all at our location. The one tolerably good exception is satellite internet. [Outdated info in 2012: now have faster internet T1]

Large trucks Large trucks
Large trucks. We have a fleet of communally owned trucks, vans and cars. Pictured are the two large dump trucks we operate.
-
Fashion show Fashion show
Fashion show. More homegrown entertainment: communard fashions modeled on the hammock shop floor runway. Here Elona models a delightful necktie skirt with contrasting black sweater top.

Marcello models Marcello models
Marcello models. Fresh from the racks of commie clothes, the entire ensembled likely was pre-owned (you know, like, "used", dude).
